India Development Gateway
India
Development Gateway (InDG) is a nation-wide initiative,
supported by the Department of IT, Ministry of Communications and IT,
Government of India and executed by C-DAC, Hyderabad.
InDG facilitates rural development through provision
of relevant information, products and services in local languages.
Building symbiotic partnership with various development stakeholders,
variable modes of delivery of value added content and services (online
and offline), use of local languages for content delivery and ensuring
pro-poor and pro-women orientation in all the services, are the guiding
strategies of the initiative.
The online mode through the multilingual portal, www.indg.in, provides information and services on the thematic areas (Agriculture, Primary Education, Health, Social Welfare, Rural Energy and E-governance), collaborative tools and a platform for learning and networking to its user communities. Information delivery is presently provided in six Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and Assamese) to begin with, apart from English. A carefully designed content framework in consultation with user communities, serves as the backbone for the portal.
InDG follows a decentralized Content
management system for content on the multilingual portal. An automated
content flow process that ensures free flow of relevant, unbiased,
value added content is the key feature of the portal. Various
interesting features that aim at providing interactivity and
comfortable use by the rural audience are the focus of the portal. They
include discussion fora, mechanisms for users feedback, Ask an expert,
online partnership form and content sharing processes.
The www.indg.in portal was launched by
Hon'ble President of India on July 4, 2008 at Vigyan Bhawan, New
Delhi.
Connecting to the grassroots
Starting from the inception of this
initiative, participation of rural communities and the people working
closely with them has been one of the unique characteristics of India
Development Gateway. The following outreach activities are being
carried out by InDG
team at grassroots level.
- Identification of information needs of the rural people and the first level service providers in the five identified verticals
- Capacity building of the first level service providers and Kiosk Operators to enhance the effective utilization of the InDG portal content
- Field testing and demonstrating the utility of InDG portal to the rural
communities
